When the Germans retired to the Hindenburg Line in January 1917, the British moved their line up as well and during the next few months, before the major offensive around Arras in early April, they launched a number of local attacks to probe the German defences and search for any weaknesses, or to improve their own position. 20th Division were involved in this and on 25th March, 1917 they started moving forward gradually from Sailly Saillesil. By 28 March the 10th Rifle Brigade battalion of 59 Brigade had reached a position in the valley behind the canal north of Etricourt and on 30th March they were part of the force that passed through the Ytres defences and captured the high ground near Neuville-Bourjonval. It is likely that this was when George Ginman, who died from wounds on 1st April, 1917, was wounded. |
